WHY CONTROLLED DRY STORAGE MATTERS

Ambient humidity can contribute to corrosion and surface deterioration

When suitable metal components are exposed to moisture, surface contamination and temperature changes, electrochemical corrosion or oxidation may develop. Even slight surface changes can matter for precision dimensions, optical finishes, electrical contact, coating adhesion or later assembly.

McDry provides a stable, enclosed low-humidity environment for approved items during intermediate or longer-term storage.

CORROSION-RELATED FACTORS

What can influence stored metal components

The result depends on the material, surface condition, contamination, packaging and duration of exposure.

01

Relative humidity

Moisture at the surface can support corrosion processes on susceptible metals and finishes.

02

Condensation

Temperature differences can cause condensation, creating a more severe local moisture condition.

03

Residues and salts

Fingerprints, machining fluids, cleaning residues and salts may accelerate surface reactions.

04

Exposure time

Repeated or prolonged exposure may increase risk during waiting, inspection or long-term storage.

SELECTED METAL STORAGE APPLICATIONS

Parts and tools that may benefit from controlled dry storage

Required humidity and cabinet suitability must be confirmed for the specific item and condition.

Precision machined parts

Shafts, gears, bearings, fasteners, valves and other high-value components.

Moulds, dies and tooling

Production tools, inserts, gauges, cutting tools and maintenance equipment.

Process intermediates

Clean, dry parts awaiting plating, coating, assembly, inspection or shipment.

Spare parts

Critical components held for maintenance, service and long-term availability.

Samples and test pieces

Reference samples, coupons, prototypes and failure-analysis specimens.

Mixed metal assemblies

Suitable ferrous, plated, copper, brass and mixed-metal components.

APPLICATION FOCUS

Industrial research storage and practical cabinet access

Storage volume is only one part of model selection. Item dimensions and access patterns also matter.

INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Selected for European industrial research applications

Multiple McDry DXU-series cabinets have been supplied for research use at a European industrial facility. The cabinets support controlled storage where repeatable environmental conditions are required for approved metal parts, tools or test pieces.

Because research materials and processes can be confidential, each application is reviewed without assuming that one installation represents every metal-storage requirement.

Application review: Tell us the material, surface condition, item size, quantity, target humidity, storage duration and access frequency.
DXU CABINET CONFIGURATION

Choose a door layout for the stored items and workflow

Different DXU configurations can be evaluated according to storage volume, item dimensions and access requirements. Smaller compartments can help limit how much of the cabinet is exposed during routine access, while larger openings may be more practical for bulky items.

DXU-1001A and DXU-1002A have both been selected for an industrial research installation. Current specifications and the best configuration should be confirmed with Seika Sangyo before ordering.

Selection point: Provide the largest item dimensions and describe how frequently each storage area will be opened.
APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Typical risks and storage considerations

Application Humidity-related concern How McDry may support storage Important review point
Precision parts Rust, oxidation or changes to critical surfaces Controlled storage before assembly or inspection Alloy, finish, cleanliness and tolerance
Moulds and tooling Surface corrosion during idle periods Dry storage between production campaigns Size, weight, oils and handling method
Cleaned process parts Re-exposure before plating, coating or assembly Protected intermediate storage after verified drying Cleaning residues and transfer procedure
Spare parts Long exposure and uncertain access intervals Controlled conditions for approved critical spares Duration, packaging and inspection plan
R&D and QA samples Variable conditions between evaluations More repeatable storage for suitable samples Material identity and safety classification
STORAGE WORKFLOW

Control the condition of parts before and during storage

1

Identify

Confirm alloy, surface treatment and corrosion sensitivity.

2

Clean

Remove fingerprints, salts and process residues as required.

3

Dry

Verify parts are dry before placing them in the cabinet.

4

Store

Use the approved humidity range, layout and handling method.

5

Monitor

Review cabinet conditions, access frequency and part condition.

WHY MCDRY

Controlled dry storage without continuous nitrogen consumption

McDry uses a zeolite-based drying unit to maintain a controlled low-humidity environment. The achievable condition depends on the selected model, loading, access frequency and ambient conditions.

✓
Stable low-humidity storage

Selected models support controlled environments for suitable parts and tools.

✓
Automatic regeneration

The zeolite drying unit regenerates automatically during normal operation.

✓
No continuous nitrogen supply

Standard operation does not depend on a continuous nitrogen connection.

✓
European support

Application review, model selection and technical support from Seika Sangyo GmbH.

MATERIAL AND SAFETY REVIEW

Store only suitable, clean and dry items

Confirm compatibility before storing parts containing oils, coolants, coatings, cleaning agents, chemicals or other residues. Flammable, volatile, corrosive or hazardous substances require a separate safety assessment and may not be suitable for standard McDry storage.

Always follow the material supplier’s Safety Data Sheet, site rules and applicable safety requirements. Load capacity and safe handling of heavy components must also be confirmed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dry cabinets for metal parts

Can a dry cabinet completely prevent metal corrosion?
No. Controlled low humidity can help reduce exposure to moisture that may contribute to corrosion, but the result also depends on the metal, surface condition, contamination, temperature, packaging and storage time.
Which metal parts can be stored in McDry?
Potential applications include suitable precision machined parts, tooling, moulds, dies, spare parts, test pieces and reference samples. The exact material and condition must be reviewed.
Must parts be cleaned and dried before storage?
Yes. Dry storage should not be used as a substitute for required washing or drying. Fingerprints, salts, machining fluids and cleaning residues can influence corrosion risk and cabinet suitability.
How do I choose between different DXU door configurations?
Consider item dimensions, shelf layout and how frequently each area will be accessed. Smaller compartments may limit exposure during routine access, while larger openings can suit bulky items. Confirm current model specifications with Seika Sangyo.
Can parts with oil or protective coatings be stored?
Possibly, but compatibility must be reviewed in advance. Provide the product name, Safety Data Sheet, quantity and condition so that suitability and safety can be assessed.
